A classic Corktown Irish pub that I wanted to love more than I did. Two rooms for a pub this size, and a pint that didn't get the care it should.
Located in the heart of Corktown, on Michigan and Trumbull, sits good ole' McShane's. A classic Detroit Irish pub. Maybe a little too classic in some ways.
This is the kind of place you want to love before you even walk in. Corktown. Irish pub. Old Detroit bones. A pint waiting somewhere in the distance.
Coming in from the back, the romance takes a hit. Cigarette butts outside, patio furniture that's survived a few too many winters, and floors inside with that sticky bar feeling we all know a little too well.
And I have to be honest: for an Irish pub in one of Michigan's most Irish neighborhoods, the Guinness disappointed me. Bubbles on the head. No thick pour. No two-part ritual. No proper glass. Maybe I'm picky, but with Nemo's, the Gaelic League and Cork & Gabel down the street putting real care into the pint, I expected more.
Respect for the hospitality. The pint and the pub floor are where it slipped.

From what I saw, two private rooms for anyone to use. For a pub this size that's already a capacity problem, and you feel it on a busy night.
They're close to the back entrance, which helps: short route in, grab bars on the wall by the toilet in both, and baby changing provided, which is worth calling out for a pub. 🚼
But overall they didn't land for me. Sticky floors, a rough toilet area, no paper towels, and a general sense that things needed more attention. Maybe it was the night. Maybe it was the lighting. Maybe it was the walk back there. Either way, I wasn't feeling it.
