Accessibility across the UK
In the UK, access is a matter of law. The Equality Act 2010 places an anticipatory duty on every service provider — from a corner café to a national museum, whatever its size — to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled people are not put at a substantial disadvantage. Because the duty is anticipatory, providers are meant to plan for access in advance rather than wait to be asked.
Two things are worth carrying with you. A RADAR key (the National Key Scheme, or NKS) unlocks more than 10,000 locked accessible toilets nationwide, from stations to pubs — you can buy one from Disability Rights UK. And a Changing Places toilet is a larger facility with an adult-sized height-adjustable bench, a ceiling hoist and space for two carers; a RADAR key does not open these, which use a separate key or an attendant. London documents these unusually well, but pubs, bars and restaurants still vary — which is where the Shooki community makes the difference.
- RADAR key (National Key Scheme / NKS)
- A standard key that opens over 10,000 locked accessible toilets across the UK. Available from Disability Rights UK.
- Changing Places toilet
- A larger facility with an adult-sized height-adjustable bench, ceiling hoist and space for two carers — not opened by a RADAR key.
- Step-free access
- Entry at street level or by ramp or lift, with no steps — flagged in Shooki alongside how wide and easy the access is.
