Way more my speed than a dive: classy start to finish, live music, a cigar lounge upstairs, and one of the best happy hours downtown that I'd rather keep quiet.
I respect Detroit's dive bar scene, I really do. But London Chop House is way more my speed.
When I go out and I'm going to spend money, I want to feel respected, taken care of, and above all get a solid drink and a solid meal. Here you get all of that and then some — live music, and a cigar lounge upstairs.
It gets better. They run one of the best happy hours in downtown. What makes it so good? I wish I could tell you, but it's one of my go-tos in the city and I'm worried that changes if it gets too popular.
The LCH is classy from start to finish. Dress code required, coat check, valet, and a doorman who greets you in and out. It's in a basement, which makes it the right place to be on a day you want to be as far from the noise as possible — and the wine list, the cocktails, a bar to sit at on your own and the steaks are why I keep coming back.
