Ladder 4 is one of those places that makes Detroit feel interesting in the best way. A wine bar and restaurant built inside a completely remodeled old fire department building. You walk in, see the fire pole still there, and think: good, they kept it. Because you have to keep that, right?
The location feels a little unexpected at first, maybe even a little rough around the edges, and that's part of the charm. Detroit has a way of putting some of its best spots where you second-guess yourself for half a second before realizing you're exactly where you need to be.
This is a place made for a good summer day. Grab friends, sit out back, sneak upstairs to the little rooftop, and let the day turn into something slower and better than you planned.
The thing that stood out right away was the pricing. The food and wine sit at the higher end — maybe some of the highest I've seen in the city outside the Prime + Proper world. I'm all for paying for a good bottle, but when something looks like it could be half the price elsewhere, it gives you pause.
Then the luck of the Irish came through: Guinness on draft at the end of the bar, proper glasses and all. Proper pour, proper glass, proper pint. Still not touching my boys at Cannons, but good enough that I'd have another without hesitation.

- Clean, well stocked, well designed, with feminine products out and grab bars in both rooms. It stops short of a 9 or 10 because there are only two rooms and I can't confirm the access.
- Layout
- Two private rooms off the main floor: a toilet with grab bars against dark ribbed walls and white subway tile, a wall-hung sink with a brass tap under a gold-framed mirror, and a wooden box of spare rolls and supplies.
- Capacity
- Two rooms on the main floor for the bar, the dining room and the back patio, which is where the wait comes from on a busy night.
I only saw the two on the main floor, both for anyone to use, though there may be more upstairs.
The ones I saw were strong. Clean, dark ribbed walls against white subway tile, a gold-framed mirror over a wall-hung sink with a brass tap, and warm light from a sconce. Grab bars by the toilet in both. Feminine products sitting in the open in a wooden box with the spare rolls, which is the detail that gets noticed on Shooki. Decent toilet paper too.
Relatively accessible from what I could tell, though I'd stop short of calling it a confirmed accessible restroom.
