The Shooki Review

The Fox is Detroit royalty. A 1928 movie palace on Woodward with over 5,000 seats, gold leaf everywhere, a lobby that looks like a Siamese-Byzantine fever dream, and a marquee so iconic the whole neighborhood is named after it. Broadway tours, big comedy, holiday shows, legends on farewell runs — if it matters, it plays the Fox, and reviewers are near-unanimous that the room itself never gets a bad word.

Now, the restrooms. This one's a split decision, and reviewers keep splitting it the exact same way. On looks, they hold their own — people genuinely rave about how ornate these restrooms are, right down to the tiled walls downstairs. On function? It's a 1928 building handling 2026 crowd sizes. The word from regulars: the rooms run small, stalls are limited, and intermission at a sold-out show means a line that can eat your whole break — women's side especially. They're also parked at opposite ends of each floor, so half the battle is just finding one. Crowd wisdom says the mezzanine level moves faster than the main floor, so climb if your seat allows it.

Gorgeous to look at, stressful to depend on when the house is full. Fox Theatre lands at a 5/10 on Shooki.

What Google Reviewers Say

9.4/10

Five thousand seats, opened in 1928, and the largest surviving movie palace of its era anywhere. C. Howard Crane had designed 250 theatres by then and called this one his best: gold leaf, red velvet, Burmese and Persian and Chinese motifs piled on each other, an elephant head presiding over the room. The Ilitches spent $12 million putting it right in 1988. The acoustics and the sightlines still get the praise.
