I got a lot of requests for this one. I'm glad I finally listened.
I'm usually a wine guy. Give me a decent red, a quiet bar, a bartender who knows Burgundy from Bordeaux. But I'm from Michigan, and if this state knows how to do one thing, it's a dive bar.
The Bronx is Detroit in one room. Rough. Loud. Unpolished. No pretense. And still safe, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. People were spilling onto the sidewalk when I walked up. Inside: pool balls cracking, burgers on the grill, loud groups dug into the corners, and one empty seat at the bar, waiting for me.
There was no wine on the menu anywhere close to what I'd normally drink, so I ordered a Yuengling. Best decision I could have made. The couple next to me commented on it, and that was that. One beer, one conversation, and you're talking like you've known each other for years. It's the kind of bar where you come home for the holidays and run into three people you haven't seen in ten years.
I tried to leave. The couple kept buying. Then a stranger challenged me to a game of pool, so I went back in. Sorry to that guy. I honestly never play.

The men's room was rough, and I have to be brutally honest about it. It wasn't clean, there were no real amenities, and there was no privacy.
The walls are covered in graffiti. There's a urinal, a steel sink, and one toilet. The door opens straight back into the crowd at the pool table. Accessibility was a no-go. I wouldn't shook in there under any circumstances.
Which is a shame, because the bar around it has one of the best neighborhood vibes I've felt in a while.
