A 1902 Detroit bar that feels poured straight out of the floorboards. The Guinness needs work. The men's room was cleaner than I expected.
Nancy Whiskey sits just north of Corktown, and it feels like it was poured straight out of the floorboards. The sign out front says 1902. The history is in the walls, behind the bar, and in the stories people are still telling over cheap beer and whiskey.
Some say Jimmy Hoffa used to take calls from the wooden phone booth that's still standing by the door. True? Maybe. Maybe not. In a place like this, the rumor is half the charm.
Police memorabilia. Firefighter gear. Detroit sports relics. Old wood under a pressed-tin ceiling. It's a neighborhood bar that doesn't need a designer, a mood board, or a $19 cocktail to explain itself. Some nights there's live music. Other nights TouchTunes either saves the room or starts a fight, depending on who gets control.
One Corktown pub complaint keeps following me around: the Guinness. For a place with Irish bones, I wanted a better pint. No two-part pour, bubbles on the head, no proper glass. Maybe I'm being dramatic. Bad Guinness makes my skin crawl a little.

Nancy Whiskey has two restrooms, men's and women's. I reviewed the men's, and it's mostly what you'd expect from an old Irish pub: bare-minimum amenities, not exactly sparkling, but spacious enough to get the job done.
Credit where it's due. Compared to a lot of pub restrooms around Corktown, this one was cleaner than I expected. Not fancy. Not polished. Not trying to win any design awards.
It's a historic building, and accessibility is a problem.
