Butcher’s Union Review & Bathroom Guide
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Meat and whiskey. Hard to argue with that. Butcher’s Union has the VIBE, and a great-looking restroom that lands at 7/10. Raise the stall walls. Tidy it up. This score climbs quickly.

Welcome to Grand Rapids.
A city that, to this Detroiter anyway, can occasionally feel polished within an inch of its life.
Nice. Clean. Put together.
Sometimes a little too put together.
Which is why I’m always looking for places with some personality.
Butcher’s Union has it.
Dark wood. Copper ceiling. Low lights. A packed bar. Enough whiskey behind it to make several bad decisions feel completely reasonable.
The pitch is simple:
Meat and whiskey.
Hard to argue with that.
For my fellow Detroiters heading west looking for good food, good drinks, and a room with some life in it, this is a solid stop.
Is it my favorite steakhouse in Grand Rapids?
No.
Bowdie’s still owns that spot in my heart.
But Butcher’s Union does what it does very well. VIBE.
Then go back upstairs, order the steak, pour something brown, and forget about it.
Best for
- Meat and whiskey
- A solid Grand Rapids stop for my fellow Detroiters
- Dark wood, a copper ceiling and a room with some life in it
Less ideal for
- Calling it my favorite Grand Rapids steakhouse — Bowdie’s still owns that spot
- Stall privacy

Restroom verdict
Great design and decent capacity, but it could be cleaner and the stall privacy is limited. 7/10 Shooki.
- Restroom inventory
- 1 reviewed area — 1 shared men’s restroom; total venue room count unknown
- Review coverage
- My observations cover the men’s restroom I used; this is not a venue-wide restroom count.
- Room reviewed
- Men’s restroom from my visit
- Why this score
- Great design and decent capacity help, but cleanliness and low stall walls keep it at 7/10. Raise the walls. Tidy it up. This score climbs quickly.
- Layout
- White subway tile, dark trim and great flooring. The stall walls stop short, limiting privacy.
- Capacity
- Decent capacity from my visit.
The restroom looks great: white subway tile, dark trim and great flooring. Somebody clearly gave a damn.
Then the stall walls stop short and suddenly you’re learning more about your neighbor than you planned.
It could be cleaner. Decent soap and decent capacity, but limited stall privacy.
A room this nice deserves better.
7/10 Shooki.
