Thomas Magee’s Sporting House Review & Bathroom Guide
Detroit, Michigan
A proper drinking establishment. Come here during a major match and you’ll understand why people love it. My Guinness unfortunately missed, and the dated, functional Shooki earns 4/10.

If there’s a football match happening somewhere on planet Earth, there’s a decent chance somebody at Thomas Magee’s is drinking whiskey and screaming at a television.
And I mean football.
Not the Lions.
Although they do plenty of that too.
This is every soccer fan’s dream Detroit pub. Liverpool. Premier League. World Cup. F1 mornings. Lions Sundays. A place willing to open at an ungodly hour because somewhere across the Atlantic, twenty-two men are chasing a ball around.
During the World Cup, this place was absolutely lit.
Packed shoulder-to-shoulder. Flags everywhere. Strangers singing together. People screaming at referees 4,000 miles away as if they can somehow hear them.
The craic gets mighty.
Dark wood. Whiskey everywhere. Sports on the screens. No kitchen—bring your own food and get on with it.
A proper drinking establishment.
Now, I judge every place on the experience I actually had.
And as a Guinness connoisseur, my pint unfortunately missed.
The head was way too big.
Then somehow the little draft plug fell directly into my Guinness. 🤣
Not exactly the garnish I ordered.
Mistakes happen. I’m not burying them over one pint. The place has enough loyal regulars and energy to convince me I probably just caught an unlucky pour.
Come here during a major match and you’ll understand why people love it.
Come early. Bring food. Order some whiskey. Find a stranger wearing the same scarf.
And start yelling.
Best for
- Soccer, whiskey and yelling at the television
- A major match with strangers wearing the same scarf
- Bringing your own food and getting on with it
Less ideal for
- An accessible restroom from my experience
- A modern restroom with more than basic amenities
- The Guinness pour I happened to get
