The Shooki Review

Visited June 2026

The Michigan Science Center sits in Midtown, right near the DIA — another Detroit heavyweight worth visiting if you’ve got the time.

Now, the DIA might be a little slow-burn for kids depending on the day. Beautiful, important, iconic… but maybe not where a five-year-old burns off steam.

Michigan Science Center is the opposite.

This place has energy. Maybe too much energy. Kids running, buttons being pushed, things lighting up, parents trying to keep up, and little science experiments happening all over the place like controlled chaos with a lesson plan.

If you’re looking for something to do with kids in Detroit, this has to be near the top of the list. It’s huge, interactive, and gives them room to move while still tricking them into learning something.

And honestly, even without kids, it’s still a cool place to check out. Bring some friends, take a gummy of some sort, catch something in the IMAX theater, and let your inner nerd have the night off from pretending to be normal. I saw Oppenheimer here. Trust me, the theater delivers.

Now, the restrooms.

I was actually impressed.

For a place that gets packed with families, school groups, kids, chaos, and sticky little hands touching everything, the restrooms were surprisingly clean. ✨

They had plenty of capacity, good accessibility, baby changing stations, and solid amenities. ♿️🚼

The decor is dated, no question. It still has a little 70s/80s public-building energy to it. But honestly, I don’t care much about that when the place is clean and functional.

Cleanliness is priority one.

For a high-traffic family spot, Michigan Science Center did a really solid job.

Great place, strong restroom setup, and plenty to do around it before or after.

Reviewers highlight the hands-on exhibits, IMAX Dome Theater, and engaging live science demonstrations as reasons this is a top Detroit stop for families. A few note that some exhibits feel dated or worn from heavy hands-on use, though the educational value draws consistently strong praise.
