Lafayette Coney Island Review & Bathroom Guide
Detroit, Michigan
Detroit without Lafayette would feel just a little less like Detroit. The institution is a ritual. The restroom is rough: tight stairs, extremely cramped and could’ve been cleaner. 1/10.

Detroit without Lafayette would feel just a little less like Detroit. The institution is a ritual. The restroom is rough: tight stairs, extremely cramped and could’ve been cleaner. 1/10.
There are certain places a city can’t really explain to outsiders.
You just have to go.
Lafayette Coney Island is one of them.
Old tile. Tight quarters. Open grill. Cash flying around. Orders barked out. People packed shoulder-to-shoulder at some ungodly hour eating chili dogs like it’s part of the civic duty.
And honestly?
It kind of is.
Detroit has cars.
Detroit has pizza.
Detroit has coneys.
And Lafayette is part of the DNA.
Love it or hate it, this place does not appear interested in changing for anybody.
There’s something admirable about that.
Politics disappear.
Status disappears.
You get athletes, politicians, tourists, celebrities, construction workers, bartenders getting off shift, and some guy who definitely made at least three bad decisions before arriving.
All eating the same thing.
Usually late.
Very late.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been here during daylight.
The institution?
That’s a different conversation.
There’s a reason people have been arguing Lafayette vs. American for generations.
There’s a reason crowds still cram in after games and at 2 a.m.
And there’s a reason this place feels less like a restaurant and more like a Detroit ritual.
Grab two coneys.
Get the chili fries.
Order a cold beer.
Sit wherever you can.
And participate.
Because Detroit without Lafayette would feel just a little less like Detroit.
Best for
- Two coneys, chili fries and a cold beer
- A Detroit ritual after the game
- A late-night stop with everybody eating the same thing
Less ideal for
- Restroom access if mobility is an issue
- A roomy or polished restroom

Jesus.
1/10.
The building is old and it shows.
Getting to the restroom is a mission.

I barely fit getting down there, so if mobility is an issue, be warned.
And yes, this place gets absolutely hammered with traffic, so I understand what they’re working with.
But the score is the score.
The restroom is rough.
