Jacoby’s German Biergarten Review & Bathroom Guide
Detroit, Michigan
I love Jacoby’s. German food, international beers, TouchTunes, and the craic is mighty. But those restrooms are dodgy as hell. 2/10.

I love Jacoby’s.
Let’s establish that before I start talking about the death staircase leading to the restroom.
This is one of those old Detroit bars that still feels like Detroit. No reinvention necessary. No consultant deciding it needs neon signs and a $17 cocktail.
Jacoby’s has been around since 1904, and you can feel those years in the building.
German food. A ridiculous selection of international beers. TouchTunes. Tigers fans wandering in after a game. People killing time before a show at St. Andrew’s. Strangers drinking together who probably weren’t strangers twenty minutes earlier.
The craic is mighty.
And they carry Schneider Weisse—one of my absolute favorite German wheat beers. That alone gets my respect.
@dakotainndetroit , if you’re listening… 👀🍺
Jacoby’s is a great lunch spot that somehow mutates into a party as the day goes on. Have some food. Order something German. Put a few dollars into TouchTunes. Talk to whoever sits next to you.
That’s Detroit.
Best for
- German food and international beers
- Schneider Weisse and some TouchTunes
- Lunch that somehow mutates into a party
Less ideal for
- Navigating the basement stairs after a few beers
- A clean, spacious restroom or easy access during my visit
- Tall people — watch your head

Restroom verdict
Cramped, dated, not particularly clean, and down a staircase from another era. I love you, Jacoby’s. But those restrooms are dodgy as hell. 2/10.
- Restroom inventory
- 1 reviewed area — 1 shared men’s restroom and 1 women’s restroom; total venue room count unknown
- Review coverage
- Men and Women signs photographed; only men’s interior evidenced. Men’s room has two urinals, one toilet stall and one basin observed across source photos. Soap and paper visible in source photos. Basement stairs and low ceiling support visit access concerns, no venue-wide compliance determination. No complete venue inventory, full fixture counts beyond the photographed interior or other room conditions were established.
- Room reviewed
- One shared restroom interior from my Jacoby’s German Biergarten visit; Men’s room
- Accessibility status
- Unknown · My caption reports basement stairs and warns tall visitors about the low ceiling. No alternate route, measurements or full accessibility compliance assessment was established.
- Why this score
- The basement stairs, cramped space, low headroom and cleanliness during my visit land this restroom at 2/10. Historic character does not save the Shooki score.
- Layout
- My review covers the restroom I visited. Complete venue restroom designations and room counts were not recorded.
- Capacity
- Complete room and fixture totals were not recorded during my visit.
Now…
The restrooms.
Scheiße. Shi Zahhh
To get there, you descend into the basement on a staircase from another era.
Accessibility? Forget about it. 🚫♿️
After a few German beers, those stairs start looking less like architecture and more like an insurance claim.
I can only imagine how many brave souls have made that descent over the last 100+ years.
And once you arrive?
Tall people: watch your head.
The restroom is cramped, dated, not particularly clean, and about as spacious as you’d expect from the basement of a building this old.
Is it gritty?
Absolutely.
Is it historic?
Sure.
Does any of that save the Shooki score?
Nope.
2/10.
I love you, Jacoby’s.
But those restrooms are dodgy as hell.
