Detroit People's Food Co-op is one of the biggest feel-good stories in the city, and for once the hype checks out. It's Detroit's first Black-led, community-owned grocery store, opened in May 2024 in the brand-new Detroit Food Commons at Woodward and Euclid, with thousands of member-owners behind it. Reviewers rave about the fresh produce, the clean bright store, and a hot food bar that gets mentioned in basically every writeup — the mac and cheese has its own fan club. Add chess nights and a cafe area where people actually linger, and the North End got exactly what it asked for.

Now, the restrooms. Here's the thing — nobody's talking about them, and for a grocery store that's usually a wash. The building is barely two years old, so you can expect everything to still work the way it should. But don't expect anything beyond standard-issue grocery store facilities either — this is a quick in-and-out situation, not a destination. When a spot is loved this much and the restrooms still can't scare up a single mention, good or bad, that's the definition of middle of the road: serviceable, forgettable, fine.
