Harless + Hugh Coffee

Some people say the farther you get from Detroit, the more the quality starts to taper off.

Restaurants. Bars. Coffee. You start preparing yourself for compromise.

But not here.

Not in Bay City.

Harless + Hugh is a nice little break in the drive if you’re making your way up north on the east side. A place that reminds you good coffee doesn’t only live in Detroit, Ann Arbor, or the places people on Instagram keep telling you to stand in line for.

Coming from Detroit, I’ve got expectations.

I want the coffee fresh. I want it right. I want it strong enough to make the day feel possible again.

This place did it for me.

Good coffee. Nice baked goods. Breakfast sandwiches. A cooler full of mixed refreshments, even wine if that’s your thing, it’s mine of course. And most importantly for a traveler like me, a room that actually works when you need to plug in the laptop, take a few calls, and pretend you’re not halfway between responsibilities.

Bonus points for outlets. Always.

Bay City surprised me a little. Between Harless + Hugh for coffee and The Public House for cocktails, this is a solid stop if you’re heading north and don’t want to settle for gas station sadness.

Now, the restroom.

It’s one private unisex restroom. Clean, nicely decorated, and perfectly fine on its own.

But here’s the issue.

It sits right out near everyone enjoying their coffee and pastry, so it doesn’t feel quite as private as you’d want. And most of my followers already know the rule — one bathroom at a coffee shop is always going to hold the score back.

Capacity matters.

So Harless + Hugh lands at a 6/10.

Great coffee. Good room. Solid stop for my Detroit people who can sniff out the bad stuff from the good.
