The Shooki Review
Visited June 2026
Northern Michigan is a box of chocolates.
Sometimes you get a hidden gem. Sometimes you get a place that makes you question your choices. And sometimes, somehow, that’s exactly what makes the whole thing worth doing.
If you’re making a long drive up north, I think you owe it to yourself as a Michigander to pull over at the random bar with the random name and walk in with zero expectations.
Leave the ego at the door.
Take in the slow service, the “you ain’t from around here” looks, the TouchTunes blasting, the pool players who look like they’ve been training for this moment their whole lives, and the random local conversations that may or may not be based in reality.
That’s part of the fun.
At Player’s you get a little bit of everything. Loud music, serious pool energy, locals cutting loose, and depending on the night, a bar that feels like it might be the liveliest room in Alpena.
So if you’re in the area and looking for action, this might be your spot.
Now, the restrooms.
I hate to be harsh, but this one struggled across almost every Shooki category.
Not accessible. Not clean. And capacity felt underbuilt for a place that can get moving. 🚫♿️
For that reason, Player’s lands at a 2/10.
Fun bar? Yes. Worth checking out if you’re nearby? Absolutely.
But restroom-wise, make your stop before you get here.
